The Old Oak is special, the only remaining public meeting space in a once thriving mining community. The landlord, TJ, clings to it by his fingertips, but his hold slips even more when the pub becomes contested territory after the arrival of Syrian refugees. An unlikely friendship develops when TJ meets a young Syrian, Yara. Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other?
We felt we had to make a film that reflected the courage and determination of the Northeast in the face of dark times. Then we learned about the Syrian refugees who settled there, and we began to think this was the story we should tell.
