Sirk’s first American film, shot after the assassination of Heydrich and the Lidice massacres. Initially an independent film made by emigrant initiative, it was purchased by MGM and two scenes were reshot by Sirk. Carradine was “a Shakespearian stage actor. A lot of Nazis behaved like Shakespearian actors”. (D. Sirk)
