Mario Soldati (Turin, 1906 – Tellaro, 1999), author, journalist, essayist, filmmaker, writer for film and TV, made his directing debut with the Italian version of the film Betrayal (1938). Stand-out titles in his later filmography include Dora Nelson (1939), Piccolo mondo antico (1941), Malombra (1942), Le miserie del signor Travet (1945), in competition at Cannes, Eugenie Grandet (1946), presented in Venice, as was the subsequent Fuga in Francia (1948), Daniele Cortis (1947), The Wayward Wife (1953), again at Cannes, and Policarpo (1959), in competition at Cannes where it won Best Comedy.
