David Wark Griffith (1875-1948) is considered one the ’fathers’ of cinema, to whose technical, expressive and productive development he made a fundamental contribution. He worked for American Mutoscope & Biograph Co., where he directed over 450 short films, experimenting with the storytelling techniques he would later perfect in his epic The Birth of a Nation (1915).
