Before coming to Hollywood, Joshua Logan (1908 – 1988) had already found acclaim as a theater director, first in college, working with Henry Fonda and James Stewart, then on Broadway. Before and after World War II, he successfully oscillated between stage and screen productions. Picnic (1955) was adapted from his own staging of William Inge’s eponymous play and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
