Mario Monicelli (Rome, 1915 – Rome 2010), was a director, screenwriter and author. Among the best-known Italian directors of his time, he was a leading exponent of the Italian Style comedy genre. After his debut short The Revealing Heart (1934), his vast filmography included Cops and Robbers (1951, with Steno, presented at Cannes), Forbidden (1955), A Hero of our Times (1955), A Tailor’s Maid (1957, best direction at Berlin), Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958), The Great War (1958, Golden Lion at Venice), The Organizer (1963), For Love and Gold (1966, in competition at Cannes), Vogliamo i colonnelli (1973, again at Cannes), My Friends (1975), Caro Michele (1976, best direction at Berlin), An Average Little Man (1977, presented at Cannes), The Marquis of Grillo (1981, best direction at Berlin), Speriamo che sia femmina (1986). In 1991 he was awarded a career achievement Golden Lion at Venice. His last full-length feature as director was The Roses of the Desert (2006).
