Il regista e sceneggiatore americano Howard Hawks (1896 – 1977) è a tutt’oggi ricordato come uno dei più formidabili cineasti della Hollywood classica. Celebre per le screwball comedy dai ritmi velocissimi come Susanna! (1938) e La signora del venerdì (1940), grazie all’elegante narrazione visiva che contraddistingue film quali Avventurieri dell'aria (1939), Acque del Sud (1944) e Un dollaro di onore (1959), ma anche per come privilegiava i personaggi femminili forti, Hawks è stato ben presto amato dalla critica d’autore.
