Phil Karlson (1908 – 1982) was a prolific director of B-movies and genre pictures – most notably noirs like Kansas City Confidential (1952) and Westerns like Gunman’s Walk (1958) – whose trademarks were short scenes and sudden moments of action. His biggest commercial success was his penultimate film, Walking Tall (1973).
