After spending his early career as a cinematographer – most notably for Laurel and Hardy comedies – George Stevens (1904 – 1975) gradually established himself as one of classical Hollywood’s foremost craftsman directors. Producing many of his own films, which allowed him a degree of independence from the studio system, Stevens helmed a number of critical and commercial successes – such as Gunga Din (1939), The Talk of the Town (1942), Shane (1953), and Giant (1956) – and won two Academy Awards for Best Director.
