Director of Locarno Factory
Stefano Knuchel worked for more than 30 years at SRG SSR as a journalist, presenter, film critic, producer, and author of cultural programs, specializing in the production of innovative journalistic formats aimed at taking topics usually reserved for a limited audience and bringing them to the public. As a filmmaker, he has also made numerous documentaries, which have been presented at some of the world's most prestigious festivals. Among them, he made a trilogy dedicated to the life of artist Hugo Pratt, the first two chapters of which were presented in Venice (Hugo in Africa, 2009; Hugo in Argentina, 2021), with the third expected in 2025.
In 2013, he began to collaborate with the Locarno Film Festival, first revitalizing the Locarno Academy, dedicated to emerging talents in the world of film, and making it an international reference point for training in filmmaking, and later bringing the BaseCamp into being at the Festival. This extensive initiative is a unique project in the international festival circuit, aiming to bring cinema into dialogue with other creative fields.
Since 2024, in his role as Director of Locarno Factory, he is responsible for all activities aimed at the younger generation and aspiring film professionals.
