You know the address: it's the house of cinema. Today, with 188 days to go before the first Locarno72 night in Piazza Grande, marks the beginning of the race for the Pardo d'oro, and more. Submissions are now open for the next edition of the Locarno Film Festival (August 7-17), paving the way for those who wish to be part of a program that tells cinematic stories and surprises audiences each year. Four sections, and an update: Signs of Life, the section that explores the very nature of cinema and reflects on itself, has undergone a name change.
As a tribute to Jonas Mekas, who passed away a few days ago, Signs of Life is now known as Moving Ahead, a reference to his 2000 film As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty. Perhaps the most epic "home movie" of all time, 288 minutes of experimental filmmaking recounting thirty years' worth of life. Jonas Mekas, the father of New American Cinema, spent his entire life exploring, disassembling and reassembling the art of filmmaking, from his first Bolex 16mm to new technologies, from the post-war period to Locarno69, when he came to the Festival with Douglas Gordon to show I Had Nowhere to Go. His entire life left a mark on cinema, never looking back. Always moving ahead.
This section, focusing on outside-the-box cinema, with no rules except that of freedom, will showcase ten films, all competing for the Moving Ahead Award, worth 5000 CHF.
