Roberto Cicutto, born in Venice in 1948, moved to Rome after graduation, where he embarked on a career in filmmaking. In 1978 he founded the production company Aura Film. As producer, he won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for Ermanno Olmi's The Legend of the Holy Drinker in 1988. In 1984 he founded Mikado Film, a company for distributing and producing films by the most representative and gifted Italian and international directors. In 1993, with Angelo Barbagallo, Nanni Moretti, and Luigi Musini, he founded the distribution company Sacher Distribuzione; also, with Ermanno Olmi, he became a partner in the production company Cinemaundici. In 1994, to mark the centenary of the birth of cinema, he was awarded the title of Commendatore by the President of the Italian Republic. In 2009, he became director of the Mercato internazionale del film e del documentario (MIFED). For several years he served as a member of the board of directors of the ACE (Atelier du Cinéma Européen), the EFA (European Film Academy), and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. From 2009 to 2020, Cicutto was president and CEO of Istituto Luce-Cinecittà. He was appointed President of the Venice Biennale in March 2020 and has, since November 2023, been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SIAE Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori.
