Giselle Lin

Giselle LIN Xuan Qing is a writer-director from Singapore. She graduated with a BA (Hons) in Film (1st) from the LASALLE College of the Arts Puttnam School of Film & Animation in 2021. Her thesis film YI yi (Time Flows in Strange Ways on Sundays), premiered at the 74th Locarno Film Festival’s Pardi di domani: International Competition section. Her upcoming short film, Children’s Day, participated in the Objectifs Short Film Incubator 2022. Concurrently, her debut feature Midnight Blue Spring, was selected for the 2021 Singapore International Film Festival’s Southeast Asian Film Lab and is one of three finalists at the inaugural 2022 Locarno Residency. Her latest short film I look into the mirror and repeat to myself premieres at the 76th Locarno Film Festival in competition.

Giselle strives to tell stories about women, for women: stories that depict women’s passions, disappointments, and routines. She is inspired by the emotional quality present in all things, living or not, and greatly appreciates the analogue process (feeling, making, hoping, waiting). She tries to capture everyday life with her film cameras and has since expanded from still photography to shooting home movies on Super 8.

Reeling from a recent divorce, a solitary secondary school teacher finds herself counselling the teenage daughter of her first love. Now, with the annual parent-teacher meeting looming, the teacher has to confront a long-buried truth about her sexuality, her identity, and her past.
