Dopo essersi affermato come autore di film muti dallo straordinario impatto visivo, il regista di origine irlandese Roy William Neill (1887 – 1946) è stato ingaggiato nel 1928 dalla Columbia Pictures, per la quale ha poi diretto diversi film, fra i quali Wall Street (1929) e Vortice (1934), interpretato da una brillante Jean Arthur. Dopo aver lasciato la Columbia e aver trascorso cinque anni a Londra è tornato a Hollywood, entrando alla Universal come produttore-regista, soprattutto per la franchise di Sherlock Holmes con Basil Rathbone.
After making a name for himself as a director of visually striking silent films, Irish-born director Roy William Neill (1887 – 1946) was hired by Columbia Pictures in 1928, for whom he made a number of films, including Wall Street (1929) and the early Jean Arthur vehicle Whirlpool (1934). After leaving Columbia for a five-year stint in London, Neill returned to Hollywood and joined Universal as a producer-director, where he helmed most of the studio’s Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone.
