Alberto Lattuada's filmography includes many film adaptations of novels. With La freccia nel fianco, the author brought to the screen the homonymous novel by the Italian-Swiss writer Luciano Zuccoli, published in 1913.
For this film, Lattuada availed himself of the collaboration of leading figures in the history of cinema: Alberto Moravia, Ennio Flaiano, and Cesare Zavattini wrote the screenplay with him.
Despite this, the plot and dramaturgy are quite conventional. Lattuada focuses on one of the strong themes of his cinema: female eroticism.
The director confirms, in his second feature, his strong anti-bourgeois criticism and, from a stylistic point of view, his great formal care for the image from a compositional and photographic point of view.
