Photography Workshop
August 11th – 18th, 2024
A new way to experience the Locarno Film Festival through the lens of photography.
The photography workshop, a collaboration between the Locarno Film Festival and the Manawa Foundation, will enable 8 young talents to explore their creative potential and engage with other young talents and established professionals attending the event.
The 8 participants selected for this workshop will dive into an in-depth experience of the Locarno Film Festival. This will involve a dynamic combination of lectures, individual photography practice, one-on-one sessions with the tutor and photographer Sven Creutzmann, and meetings and events alongside participants from the Locarno BaseCamp and the Locarno Academy.

Sven Creutzmann was born in East Germany and trained as an advertising photographer in Hamburg. He worked in photo studios for 3 years, followed by 7 years as a news photographer for the British news agency Reuters. For the past 27 years, his main focus has been documentary photography for magazines, with an emphasis on Latin America, especially Cuba. He contributes to Getty Images in New York, Zeitenspiegel Reportagen in Germany, and is also a founding member of Jibaro Photos, a collective of international documentary and art photographers, founded in 2020. Creutzmann has published 4 books, gives lectures, shoots commercial productions, and teaches photo workshops in Latin America and worldwide.
The 8 participants selected for the workshop will work on a personal photography project while experiencing the Locarno Film Festival. The offer includes accommodation, breakfast, networking events, screenings, exclusive meetings, and more.
During the workshop, participants will take photographs with analogue instant cameras provided by the organization. Each participant will have the opportunity to work on a personal project and choose the topic independently.
Each morning, there will be group meetings with lectures on different aspects of professional photography and open discussions on the photos taken by each participant. In the afternoons, participants will be free to work on their projects. This can be done in a group, alone, or one-on-one with Sven. It is important that each participant finds their own personal style and voice and develops it consistently throughout the workshop.
On the final day, each participant will work on their personal journal, collecting all the snapshots taken over the days.
The offer includes a free pass to the Locarno Film Festival to attend all official screenings, including those on the Piazza Grande. It also includes invitations to exclusive events organized with BaseCamp and the Locarno Academy and access to special masterclasses.
This workshop is for photography and film enthusiasts and young creative minds from around the world between the ages of 18 and 30.
No prior experience or technical equipment is required.
