Mathieu Volpe (Rome, 1990) was raised by his Belgian mother and his Italian father in Bari, in the South of Italy. In 2009 he moved to Belgium in order to study filmmaking. His shorts have been presented in several international festivals such as Locarno, Torino, Dok Leipzig and Fipadoc. An Italian Youth, shot between Italy and Burkina Faso, is his first feature-length documentary. In parallel, he is developing Red Gold, his first fiction feature, produced by the Dardenne brothers and recently presented at the Jerusalem Film Lab, where it won the Emerging Filmmaker Award.

While trying to repatriate the body of her son who died in the South of Italy, Regina (45, Burkinabé) discovers the system that made him a slave and tries to accomplish the mission he was unable to fulfill, turning her grief into revolt.
Each era has its slaves. That's what I thought in 2014 when I discovered the Ghetto, a huge slum hidden in the South of Italy, a few kilometers far from my childhood town. With Red Gold, I want to expose this hidden reality that we, as Westerners, tend to overlook.
