Prefestival Events & Screenings

Before the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival kicks off, a series of events will take place throughout the ten days of August. Curated by artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, these initiatives bring special selections of past works from previous editions of the Festival to Switzerland, from squares to museums to Alpine peaks. Recent discoveries and surprises, or gems from the past that have made cinematic history, the films presented are the perfect way to prepare for the screenings on the Piazza Grande.

14th June - 2nd August, 2024

Ticino, Switzerland

Festeggiamo

Following the success of previous years, the municipalities of Locarnese and Valli, with the support of the Locarno Film Festival, will once again this year offer the population an open-air touring film festival, bringing the films that have marked the history of the Festival to no fewer than eight locations in the region - two more than in the previous edition. From mid-June until the beginning of August, the public will thus have the opportunity to experience the Piazza Grande in many picturesque squares and locations in the Locarno region and its valleys. The selection of films was curated by the Festival's artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, who will retrace some of the great titles of the retrospectives of the Locarnese film festival par excellence, taking the audience on a journey through time.

Villa De Angeli Frua

This year, the magic of open-air cinema will also cross national borders, thanks to a new collaboration between the Locarno Film Festival, the Municipality of Laveno-Mombello and the Filmstudio 90 Association. On 1 August, a classic of contemporary cinema will be screened in the splendid setting of the Villa De Angeli Frua park: Das Leben der Anderen, by the German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, winner of the Prix du Public UBS in 2006 and later Oscar winner for best foreign film. The film will be shown in its original language with Italian subtitles.
