Markela Kontaratou

Markela Kontaratou is a filmmaker and visual artist. She studied Fine Arts at the Athens School of Fine Arts, as well as English Literature at the American College of Greece. She completed an MA in Filmmaking with distinction at The London Film School. Through film she explores the possibilities of genre and studies human behavior in a setting that blurs reality and fiction. Her graduation film Scorched Earth premiered at Locarno77 and was selected at festivals such as Palm Springs Shortfest, Aesthetica and Poitiers. She served as cinematographer for No Future Kids (2024), which was awarded Best International Student Short Film in Drama International Short Film Festival 2024. Her latest short fiction film in development, Meridian, won the development award at the Athens Pitching Lab, and was selected for Midpoint Shorts 2024-2025. Her work as a visual artist has been showcased in exhibitions internationally.
