James Cruze (1884 – 1942) was an American actor and director who was at the height of his power during the silent era, directing comedy shorts, thrillers, and big-budget epics like the Western The Covered Wagon (1923). His career declined after the advent of sound film. After a string of projects for various studios – including Columbia – and a collaboration with Will Rogers that was cut short by the actor’s sudden death, Cruze died by suicide, aged 58.
