Winning the Prix du Public UBS doesn’t always require an all-star cast. Sometimes, like in 1996, all you need is a group of tiny insects, whose daily struggles are viewed up close and transformed into a huge, epic vision: a snail dragging its shell through the plants, or a spider constantly refashioning its web, while above their heads you can hear the menacing buzz of the bees or the impertinent jumping around of the grasshoppers. It sounds like a far away planet, but it’s actually Microcosmos, a universe hidden in the grass and in a pond, viewed on a scale so human as to naturally bring the Piazza Grande together.
